10 Questions Mostly Asked About TV Licenses
Q1. Why must I pay for a TV licence?
A1. It is a legal obligation in the country that who so ever is in possession of a TV set or any gadget capable of receiving television broadcast must be in possession of a valid TV licence.
Q2. Where can I pay?
A2. STAR has branches in Mbabane, Manzini and Simunye, you can pay in person or by post. In addition, every Post Office is an agent for STAR so that you do not have to travel very far to pay and make yourself a legal viewer.
Q3. Why must I pay for a licence for a Video Recorder?
A3. As the law is currently written, a viewer's licence is required for every bit of equipment that can receive a TV signal. A Video recorder can record one programme while you are watching another for later viewing. Secondly a video recorder can receive a TV signal and the same can be viewed on an ordinary monitor.
Q4. I do not watch Swazi TV, Why should I pay a licence fee?
A4. In Swaziland even if you receive SABC channels, you do not pay a licence fee to SABC, nor do we expect to receive a licence fee from those viewers across our borders that receive Swazi TV. So if you reside in Swaziland you pay to Swazi TV, and to SABC if you live in South Africa.
Q5. I only watch satellite and I pay a subscription fee to them, why should I pay Swazi TV?
A5. In South Africa M-Net and DSTV viewers are still obliged to pay their TV licence to the national station , SABC. The same rule applies in Swaziland, you pay to Swazi TV. It does not matter what channel you watch.
Q6. My set is out of order and beyond repair, why must I pay?
A6. Bring it to the nearest STAR branch, we will seal it or scrap it for you and then you need not pay.
Q7. I have sold my set but you still send me a statement to pay, what should I do?
A7. As soon as you sell your TV set or Video recorder, tell us otherwise we will not know that you no longer have it. Give us the name and address of the person you sold it to and then they will be liable for the licence fee, at STAR we have a "change of ownership" form that you can use or an ordinary letter with the details will be enough.
Q8. I bought my set at a furnisher shop. Where does STAR fit in?
A8. All furnisher shops should have been registered with STAR to act as agents for us. The furnisher shops collects the license fee and submit it to STAR for computerization of the viewer's details to make it easy in the future to send statements.
Q9. I bought my set outside the country, how do I register?
A9. You can register at any STAR branch.
Q10. What can happen to defaulters?
A10. They face having to pay the arrears, a E500.00 fine or 6 months in prison,or both.Not paying your TV licence is a criminal offence!
